Another update

A few more updates today...Overall, Rob's doing OK but definetly not out of the woods. He's become jaundice but the doctors feel it's from all the blood products he's received. To date, he's received over 100 units of blood. His urine output has also increased which is good but it is really dark. The doctor is very confident it is from muscle breakdown which is not uncommon in a situation like this. His lungs are not producing much output anymore so the chest tubes may be able to be taken out within the next few days. His temps have remained stable with the use of a cooling blanket. The blanket causes the shivering action so it's hard to tell if Rob is shivering or moving sometimes. The doctor did tell me tonight that if he does happen to wake up, he will mildly sedate him for 2 reasons: 1) he doesn't want him to pull out tubes and 2) to take the "edge" off. He said this will only be intermittant and not cause him to go into a deep sleep again. At this time the doctor doesn't believe he is septic although he said he would be shocked if he didn't have some sort of an infection in his legs from all the debris in the field. It takes a few days for blood cultures to come back on that. They may or may not do the MRI tonight. The doctor said he would like to have Rob take it easy for awhile since it was pretty hard on his body from flying for so long. So, rIght now we're just waiting. That's the hardest part. I wish I could have a snapshot of a year from now so I can see where we'll be. But, as so many of you have written and reminded me, "God is in control and anything can be done through Him." Ryan and Nancy Kules stopped by and I was able to talk to them about things which really helped. It's so nice to have someone so close to you that's gone through the same thing. They were even so kind as to bring me some much belated cheesecake (thanks, Nancy!!!). Then today Ryan took me out to lunch and again we spoke. He said it perfectly "it's almost a blessing and a curse to know someone who's gone through this." It's so easy to compare Ryan's recovery to Rob's but every person is different and every person recovers differently. Only time will tell, but I have faith that everything will turn out ok. I know many of you would like an address as to where I'm staying. I don't have one right now but as soon as I get the chance, I will get a PO box and put it on the blog site. I'll update again soon.

See God agreed with you, time to give Rob a little break and let him have some time to recover! Just an update before you mentioned that and then the doctors tell you that is exactly what they are doing!!! He is listening Dena, and will continue to do so! Although the wait must be very difficult, just remember God and Rob are working non-stop together to bring him back to you and your girls!
And girl take this time to get some rest or chat with friends. I am so glad you got to be with Nancy and Ryan. And for your families being there for one another. You are amazing! I have always known that since I met you and now the whole World does too!! Wow, over 8000 checks on your site!

Love you girl! And Rob, take this much deserved break and heal, heal, heal! Love you too!

Hang in there. The recovery road is a long bumpy road with many curves. I know you feel bad about having those moments where you feel like crying, but you deserve and need to take the time to let everything out. Thank you so much for keeping the blog up to date. I check for updates many times throughout the day as I pray for Rob's recovery. Tell Natalie hi and that I am thinking of her.

Dena, I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through. You have totally amazed me with the strength and courage that you have shown. Don't forget to take care of yourself though, Rob will need you at 100% to get through this. There are so many people pulling for you as you already know. That is amazing in itself. This has touched so many people, and we need to realize that we never know what lies ahead for any of us. We just need to keep a strong faith, and remember that God will see us through. Give Rob a hug for us. Love, Pam, Ryan, Nolan, Mason, Logan and Keyan

Dena: Take one day at a time, one hour at a time, one minute at a time, AND TAKE CARE OF YOU! YOU need to get some rest and be strong when Rob will need you. I KNOW this is hard to say on my part, I know you want to be there 24/7 for him, but he's going to need you strong for along time.
IF you need to talk to someone, I have names of professional people that will help you through this, BUT a good cry is a GOOD thing! SO YOU GO FOR IT!
All of these updates are so helpful, I am sure you don't need to or want to tell 9,000 people. WOW, alot of people on this website love you guys. IF you are reading all of these GOD BLESS YOU, I am doing my best to keep up with them, TAKE SOME OF THEIR ADVICE girl. I KNOW you don't want to, but you need to.

Dena, I've never beent through anything like you guys are going through right now. There have been a few years that have been difficult, and your statement, "I wish I could have a snapshot of a year from now..." really tugged at my heart. Somebody once prayed for me that I would have "a peace that passes understanding." I didn't understand that until I felt it. I'm going to pray for that for you tonight, and probably every day for quite some time.

Ryan and Nancy sound like really good folks, and wonderful support for you right now, too.

Me and the boys are praying for you guys.

I google searched your name last Tuesday when we first heard about everything. There were a couple things out there, but not that many. I did it again today and that numbered has rocketed! It seemed like there are thousands. It is amazing the amount of support you have! It really gave me a boost of pride in this great nation. It really rejustified for me the reason I also served this great country. Dena, I also know what it is like to be a military spouse with children, as my wife is still serving active duty. It really takes a lot! Just keep tackling everything second by second, minute by minute and know we are all here for you.
Love,
Tator (Rob's cousin Nate)

Wow, Dena-two updates in one day! You are truly awesome, and so are Ryan and Nancy! How great that you have those close friends who truly do know what you're going through in addition to your family! I don't know what else to say except we keep on praying! We drove by your Dad's tonight & their flag is at half-staff. Veteran's day will be even more special this year as we pay tribute to all our servicemen and women who serve so selflessly and bravely! Hang in there, girl! Love & Prayers--Jackie & Joe

Dena and Family,
You don’t know me, but my kids (Paige & Keith Tyler) are close to you and Rob. I’m Paige’s Mom. I just want you both to know that we keep both you and Rob in our family and personal prayers everyday!
If I could leave you with one thing it would be to tell you to always try and look at each situation and ask God what am I to learn from this? And remember to listen for that still small voice. He has many gifts for us, but there not all easy. I truly believe with all my heart that everything we each go though in this life is to teach us something. To trust, to listen, to have patience, to ask for help (really hard for most people) – Don’t let it tear either of you down, because that’s the adversary working on you and wanting you to just give up! God wants you to succeed! (all things that bring happiness and good feeling are from God) So when things get hard and they will , remember that and ask God to guide you both.
God Bless you All & from all the comments your in ALL our Prayers!

Dena,

I read both of your updates today and they were so moving. I could feel your heartache with every word. I wish I knew you, and lived close by so I could fly over to that hospital and give you a big hug! You are being so brave and I can tell by your posts that you are a remarkable woman.

I think one thing that would really help you is to sleep for at least ten hours. Jetlag, and long flights do people in when they are on vacation. Imagine the effect it is having on you with all this stress.

I am so glad to hear that more of your family were able to go to D.C. to support you and your husband. It will be so nice to take shifts so that some family member can always be by his side and yet all of you can get the rest you need.

There is no worse stress than dealing with the nightmare you and your family are living right now. You MUST get away from it all now and then or you will go off the deep end. Maybe a movie, or a quick pedicure in between visits with Rob would be just the thing you need.

God will see you through this, and thousands of us are praying for peace and healing for your family.

With respect and admiration....

Dena,
Got this email today from someone on my HighSchool ROTC page where I had left a prayer request for Rob. Thougtht I should share......

Kitty Carmody Hagan said,
"Thank God! Subscribed to the feed myself. My Mike spent 4 years with Uncle Sam and then another 10 or so in the 141st F/A of the LA National Guard at Jackson Barracks, NOLA. Called up for Desert Storm and federalized two weeks before college graduation, and based at Ft. Hood, and D/S ended just a couple weeks before his unit left. So that story really resonated with me. Mike ended up as SFC of B Battery of the 141st, but served as the Top Kick., so of course, we love our boys. I can't imagine what they're going through now. I haven't signed the log, though I suppose I should, but I put them on every prayer chain I can think of, and got an email forwarded back from CANADA Monday that one of our writers' guilds had picked it up and spread it to all their prayer chains, as well. They're tied in internationally. So, partially through your post, Rob and Dena have become quite "famous." There are better ways to earn fame, I suppose, but how humbling to realize how many people care!"

I wish I could give you a BIG hug right now.

Remember that flight attendants always tell their passengers to put their own oxygen mask on FIRST... Before the person sitting next to you, before your kids even. There is a reason for this. So, too, must you take care of yourself first so that you can take care of Rob as well. Don't feel badly about having to take time to rest, regroup, or have a good cry.

I will pray that Rob's rhabdo resolves quickly, and that his body continues to heal.

Sending lots of love and prayers your way,

Rob and Dena,
I can't imagine what you have gone through and have yet to go through, but faith, hope and loving support, even from people you don't know, will guide you both through this difficult time. The Bible says the Lord will never give us more than we can handle, but this situation is certainly a test for your family.
Our 17-year-old daughter joined the National Guard in June of this year. We had to sign for her because of her age, but she has planned to do this for over three years. The day I signed that piece of paper, I had mixed emotions. I was reluctant to let my "little girl" join the Guards, but on the other hand was so proud of her for wanting to serve her country. She attends Osceola High School and will leave 3 days after graduation for basic training in Georgia. Rob must have felt this same need to serve his country, and I am so proud of him and all of our soldiers who serve and have served. Thank you Rob for your sacrifice for our freedom - I truly believe God will heal you and reward you and your family. Dena - keep the faith and know thousands of people are praying for you and your family. Please remember to take care of yourself as you know the road ahead will be long. God bless all of you, and you are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you for keeping this blog so everyone can follow Rob's progress. Take good care of those little girls!

I have been following your blog and Rob's progress with interest and prayer for his recovery. I am amazed at the response of both your friends, family and others and hopefully this helps to keep your spirit and strength up. I cannot even imagine the emotions you must feel and what it takes to get through this. Your comment on wishing you had a snapshot of what it will be like in one year may be answered somewhat by taking a look at a book written by Lee Woodruff "In an Instant" which she wrote about the difficulty she experienced as the wife of Bob Woodruff the TV commentator who was injured by an IED in Iraq and their experience with recovery. It is an inspirational book and the emotions you describe even at this early point in time are very similar. It is available at Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Instant-Familys-Journey-Love-Healing/dp/0812978250/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225983644&sr=1-1

Know well that Rob is in my thoughts for a fast recovery. Our troops have always been the true heroes and their sacrifice for all of us is never forgotten. I also include their families in that sacrifice also and have tremendous respect for you. Keep up your spirits.
